Update #7

October 7, 2009

Hi all,

Looks like we will have a nice turnout and some cool but great weather for an Adventure race this Saturday!  I was out there in the woods today and it was great to be out.

If your team is coming to the Friday night nav. clinic for beginners, please bring warm clothes and a light/headlamp.

I can tell you now, stage enough food and fluids at Ottawa lake with your canoe/bikes for at least 6-8 hours of racing.  You will start at Mackie as stated and you will end up at Mackie NEAR the race finish.  Remember, there will be areas during the race where you can get water.

If I was doing the race, I would stage the following at Ottawa Lake: a bottle of fluids on my bike and a few energy bars.   I would also leave my camelback/pack filled with about 2 liters of fluids and few more energy bars.    That would work for myself....its your choice if you want more or less but plan for needing that 6-8 hours worth of food & fluids when you leave Ottawa.

We will have a volunteer at Ottawa Lake between 6-8am watching your gear.  But if you would like to bring a lock for your canoe and bike, you may.  We don?t anticipate a problem, but we are NOT responsible for any missing or stolen gear.   After the paddling section is done, we will be leaving Ottawa lake, so if you are leaving your own canoe and paddling gear, it will be your choice if you would like to lock your canoe and gear - there will be no race personnel there to watch it for you so I would suggest locking things up.   I will take a pickup truck full of JUST paddles and PFD's back to Mackie for anyone who wants me to do this.  I believe your paddling gear will be safe under your canoe once you leave, but you never know.

I look forward to seeing all of you soon.........Andy  WARS

Update #6

October 5, 2009

Hello Racers:

We have a great turnout for the race, over 40 teams, thanks to all!

Some last notes:
Like I said, stage canoes at Ottawa lake Shelter B by the red cones, which are on the LAKE side of shelter B.  Stage bikes on the other side or east side of shelter B.

If you are renting, canoes will be there when you need them.   You can drop canoes and bikes off between 6 am to 6:45 am Saturday morning.
Some people have asked about water on the course and yes, there will be areas during the race where you can get water.   I will explain at the race meeting.
Remember race meeting is at 7am at Mackie picnic area and packet pickup is between 6-7am at Mackie.  We have a good turnout so please try not to be late.
Mackie Picnic area is not far from Ottawa lake.  Look at the Driving Directions link and just go back to Hwy 67, go right or southeast on Hwy 67 for about 1/4 mile and take your first left back onto Hwy ZZ. Go east on hwy ZZ for about 1 mile or so to Mackie Picnic area.   Look for a small WARS registration side along the road.
Remember, you can stage water and food on your bike when you drop it at Ottawa lake.  If you wish, you can also leave a vehicle at Ottawa lake if you are bringing your own canoe or coming with 2 vehicles, just remember all vehicles parked in the forest must have a park sticker, either annual or daily, or you will be ticketed by the rangers.

See you all soon!

Update #5 - WE ARE OUT OF RENTAL CANOES

October 2, 2009

As of this afternoon we have rented out every available canoe from our rental canoe supplier.  Any team that has not yet secured a rental canoe will not be able to rent one from us.

Update #4 - PLEASE READ IF YOU NEED A RENTAL CANOE!!!!!

October 1, 2009

If you were hoping to rent a canoe but have not contacted me about this yet YOU MUST CONTACT ME BY THIS WEEKEND as we are almost out of available canoes to rent.  Please contact me at
andy_mac9@msn.com.
If you have not reserved a canoe by Monday October 5th you will likely not be able to get a rental through the company we have secured for this.

Update #3

October 1, 2009

On Saturday morning Ottawa lake will be open to your vehicles at 6am but there will NOT be a person at the station until 8am.   So if you need a trail pass or a vehicle sticker, you have a few options:  If you are camping or near Ottawa lake Friday night, there will be a person in the booth to sell you a pass or sticker until 10pm.  OR you can obtain a pay envelope from me at the Mackie picnic area and you can put cash or a check into the envelope and the envelope slip will serve as your proof of pass and/or sticker during the race OR you can buy the trail pass and vehicle stickers on line at :   http://www.fwsp.org/stickers_passes/   However be aware it takes a few days for your sticker to get to your house.

Update #2

October 1, 2009

Race distances have been posted on the fall race home page and are approximately as follows:

Running - 3 miles
Road Biking - 37 miles
Paddling - 4-5 miles
Mountain Biking - 5 miles
Trekking/Na - 5-7 miles depending on your route choice

Update #1

September 30, 2009

Hello Racers.

The race is coming along fine and we have a good turnout so far!   We ran into some webpage hosting problems but thanks to Kelcy, we are on the way to setting up a new site here and all of the information from the previous site should be up on this site now.

I WOULD LIKE TO ALSO GIVE ALL OF YOU SOME GOOD NEWS - DOUG PASTRICH OF RACE SPONSOR 1st BASIS CONSULTING, WHO WILL BE RACING WITH US, DONATED ENOUGH MONEY TO THE RACE TO GET SOME GREAT REI GEAR FOR THE WINNERS IN ALL 4 DIVISIONS.   THANKS DOUG AND SCOTT LIVINGSTON AT REI!!!

And now, a few last bits of important info, both of which have been added to the mandatory gear list:
-I would like all racers to bring a $5 bill for something I have planed for the race.
-I would also like all racers to make sure they bring a writing pen or pencil.    That seems to be a common item that gets forgotten along with all the other gear that is needed for an adventure race.

I will remind all racers to read the RACE INFO link and MANDATORY GEAR link .

Make sure that you are at Mackie picnic area at the correct time.

Make sure you get your canoe and bikes to the Ottawa Lake, Shelter B staging area before the race meeting time of 7am. You will not have time after the race meeting!

If your team is renting a canoe, your canoe, paddles and PFD's will be at Ottawa lake already .   Those teams that are renting canoes can also bring their own paddles and PFD's if you choose.

Those teams that are bringing their own canoes, make sure you have a lock for your canoe if you so choose.  I will have a cable located at Shelter B for those teams who wish to lock their gear.   Teams may also leave a vehicle at Shelter B if they wish for
storing their canoes.

Your team may also store food and drink at Ottawa lake Shelter B if you wish.  I can tell you now, we will only be doing the paddling at Ottawa lake.

Race starts at Mackie Picnic area and then advances to Ottawa lake.  We will leave Ottawa lake on bikes.   I will let you know the rest at the race meeting.

You must have a Wisconsin state trail pass for this race and a vehicle sticker.  If you still need to purchase a trail pass for your mountain bike , make sure it is dated for race day, 10/10/09.   Ottawa lake should be open at 6 am . (See update #2 above) If your vehicle needs a state sticker, you may obtain that at Ottawa lake also.   Those of you who will be in that area Friday night, Ottawa lake stays open until 11pm to obtain any of those items.  These items may also be obtain before hand on line
.

For any beginners who would like some free navigational advice, I will be hosting a clinic at Ottawa lake, Shelter B on Friday night 10/09/09  between 6pm and 8pm.
I will probably have one last update before the race so be sure to check back!

Thanks to all of you for coming out and I look forward to seeing you there!.........Andy
