SKMC Fall Race Updates

UP DATE 10/3/2011

Well we are getting close to race date and all is ready to go .  We have a good turnout and now its time for a final update.

Again, packet pickup is 5am-5:45am at Mackie and pre race meeting is 6am-6:45am and race starts at 7am.   IMPORTANT - Your team will be  dropping Bikes , canoe , canoe gear , food and drink to last 10 hours at OTTAWA LAKE -SHELTER B,  .   If you are renting canoes , your canoe and paddles and pfds will already be there when you arrive during the race, race will start at mackie.  The directions to Ottawa lake are on the directions link.   It is not far from Mackie.   You may come to Mackie 1st and pick up your packet and then drop this gear off, or better yet, drop the gear off 1st.  I will ask you to drop any canoes off on the LAKE side of the shelter and your bikes on the east side or opp. side of the shelter B.

There will be areas on the course to get water, one of the areas will be Ottawa lake, there is bathrooms there also.  If i was doing the race, i would leave maybe 2 water bottles at Ottawa lake, enough food to last 10 hours and thats it.   I would bring my camel back and navigation gear to the race start, Mackie. Also bring your 1st aid kit and 2 working cell phones per team.

You may pack away your cell phones during the paddling section so there is no risk to them.

Locks for gear is another topic, while we will have volunteers at most areas, we can not always be watching or responsible for lost gear.  We have never had a problem with this, but its not a bad idea to bring both a lock for your bike and canoe, esp your canoe.  After you use your canoe at Ottawa lake, the canoe will be left unattended at times until you pick it up after the race.   This is on DNR land and is pretty secure, but i will have a cable by shelter B at Ottawa lake if you want to lock it after the race.  Thanks for working with us on this.

Double check the GEAR list again to make sure your team has everything on the list.   2 compasses per team is a must!

For those of you who  need State Park stickers for their cars and Trail passes for the mt. biking,  i will have envelopes for both at Mackie or if you are coming to the state forest Friday night, the station at Ottawa lake will be open until 10pm Friday.  Make sure you have them date the mt bike pass for Saturday the 8th.

Navigation beginners clinic :   we have a few who will be taking part in this clinic Friday at 5pm at Mackie, if you would like to join us, then contact me at andygmac61@gmail.com  Thanks.

Well that should do it, I look forward to seeing all of you on Saturday !!!    Andy and the WARS team.

UP DATE 9/28/11

Hello all, I have been in the woods, going over the course and it is great to be out there this time of year with the turning of the leaves and slightly cooler weather, good time of year to be racing.

A few important notes.  As far as the walkie/cell phone event, I went over that again this weekend and it worked out good.  This will be a small event to give you guys a break in the biking.  I am asking your team to bring both; 2 working cell phones per team and 2 walkie talkies .  The walkies can be the cheaper type if you perfer. Good for a mile and not 5miles.   I would just ask for  2 cells alone but i do not know how each teams cell coverage will be in the forest.   I have US cellular and i had good coverage, however , if you have someone else as a carrier, your coverage may not be as well so i am asking for walkies also just to make sure ALL have coverage.  So bring both but the walkies can be the cheaper type if you wish. Again, this is a very small section of the race and there will be plenty of regular navigation this year .        Thanks

  NAVAGATION CLINIC

If any beginners would like a small navigation class , please email me at  my contact link.  andygmac61@gmail.com   If i get enough beginners who are very interested, i will hold a small class Friday before the race at 5pm at Mackie shelter ( race start)

This would be for those who are new to the sport or who feel they need help in this area.    The race will have a good chunk of navigation.

Watch for one more up date soon, thanks.

Hello Racers               8/4/11

We are exicted to offer another adventure race for this October 8, 2011.  This years race will be a 10-12 hour race.  Meaning that the faster racers should finish the course in around 10 hours and the rest of the pack should take a little longer.   This years race will have approx.  35-45 miles of road biking, 6-9 miles of single track mt. biking, 5 or so miles of paddling, some running and 2 navigation maps.   These distance may change slightly before the race.    As usual, read the Mandatory gear list , there are a few new items this year, and read the Up Dates links here because they will be up dated as we get closer to race date.  We already have racers signed up and if you want to race, please visit the Registration link.  No race day registration please.    We hope to see you out there.
