2007  SKMC 12-Hour Spring Race Information

Hello All.  This year, I have decided to put on two 10-12 hour races . On May 19th , we will host the SKMC 12 hour Spring Race and then another 10-12 hour race on October 13th.  I may bring the 18 hour back again in 2008, we will see.  I want to thank all racers who made 2006 a successful and safe racing season.

The Spring Race will be a LOOP course and will be staged in the beautiful southern kettle moraine forest. I will let racers know exactly where the start will be on the UP-DATES link once we get closer to race date but you can bet it will be somewhere in the Southern Kettle Forest.        I will have a mix of paddling, road biking, Mt. biking , running and of course , navigation .   I would like to see most teams as 4-person co-ed however I will have a division for 2-person teams also.  Same as last year.  The 2-person teams may be any gender, however, all 2-person teams will compete against each other no matter what their gender configuration.

As with most of our races, expect a balanced amount of disciplines. Road biking, mt. biking, running, navigating, flat water paddling.

Racers will use their own canoes.  All 4 person-co-ed teams must come with  2 canoes, or one canoe per 2 person teams. There will be a slight handicap depending on how fast your canoe is.  Please bring your canoes to registration so I can handicap them.

This is a non-supported race.  This year you do not need to bring a SHUTTLE person if you so choose.  I will set it up this year where you may swing back after the race to pick up your canoe.  Just make sure your team brings a lock for your canoe. This will be mandatory to bring a lock. Canoes will be in a pretty  secure area but I would prefer not to take chances .  If you want to bring a friend to shuttle your canoe,  that would be fine but not necessary for this race.  You may also bring 2 vehicles if you wish and leave one vehicle with the canoes.   The start and finish area and the paddling section will be close to each other for this race.

The Mt. biking is single track and the SKM forest has some of the best  mt. biking.  Only  1  bike per/racer and I would recommend a mt. bike with fast trail tires or similar.  However your team may bring any kind of bike except a tandem.  Road biking sections will be on low traffic country roads.   Each racer will need a TRAIL pass dated for May 19th.  If you do not already have a trail pass, they may be obtained at OTTAWA LAKE ranger station.  The pass is inexpensive.   Your vehicle must also have a WI state park sticker. If your team does not already have a park sticker, this too may be obtained at Ottawa lake .  Directions for Ottawa lake will be on the directions link above.  I will have a mandatory race meeting Friday May 18th at 8pm.  Directions for the location for this meeting will be given at a later date on the UP-DATES link .  Packet pickup will also be at this area before the meeting.

The navigation MAY be a mix of any scaled map. Expect different scaled maps.   I will let teams know at the meeting what scale the navigation maps will be.     Your team will NOT have to plot UTMs as the controls will already be plotted on the maps. Your job will be to find them.  WARS races are known for their tough navigation and I am sure  it will be no different this year.  If you feel that you are not quite skilled enough to handle this portion of the  race, I will hold a small nav. clinic after the Friday night race meeting.

The race will be a loop and I will let racers know of areas where they can get water on the course. Racers may also leave both water and food at the paddling section of the race.

I look forward to seeing all my AR friends again and want to THANK all returning racers.  There has been plenty of early interest in this race and I will do my part to put on a challenging event.

One last note.  Anyone who would like to volunteer during the race to help out a little, please contact me at andy_mac9@msn.com . The jobs are normally easy and it normally involves taking pictures and time splits.  Volunteers will receive a free meal and T-shirt at the end of the event.  More details will follow on the UP-DATES link as we get closer to the race date. To register , go back to HOME page and then the REGISTRATION link.

THANK YOU...............andy
